Correct word isn't ᎦᏂᏝᎢ, it appears
ᎦᏁᏟᏴᏓ ᎰᏪᎸᎦThere are no hits in the online dictionary and the Cherokee Nation poster gives what can be translated as "forest/wilderness dweller" ᎢᎾᎨᎢ ᎠᏁᎯ as the term for animals.[1] ᎦᎾᏝᎢ is the Noquisis word list choice for the word animals. Meanwhile, The Cherokee English dictionary says ᎦᎾᏝᎢ means livestock. The Cherokee English dictionary also gives ᎡᎿᎢ as meaning non-domesticated animals. Maybe ᎢᎾᎨᎢ ᎠᏁᎯ is best. That poster even shows domesticated animals. Biosthmors (talk) 23:28, 21 ᏕᎭᎷᏱ 2019 (UTC)
- I wonder if forest/wilderness dweller is meant to imply, in contrast to fish, that these are land-dwelling creatures. Perhaps there isn't an word for animal in Cherokee as it is used in English (to categorize both fish and land animals). Biosthmors (talk) 23:32, 21 ᏕᎭᎷᏱ 2019 (UTC)
- I think scientific use of animal is different from usual usage anyway. Most people won't categorize "spider" as animal, instead they'd categorize it as a bug. While "bug" is scientifically a useless term, as spiders and insects are not especially related. So for now, I'd leave it the way it is. --Ooswesthoesbes (talk) 08:26, 22 ᏕᎭᎷᏱ 2019 (UTC)
- One further data point is that the main page, ᎤᎵᎮᎵᏍᏗ, currently uses ᎦᎾᏝᎢ to group animals. Biosthmors (talk) 16:07, 26 ᏕᎭᎷᏱ 2019 (UTC)
- I use ᎦᎾᏝᎢ when talking about a specific "animal" but the plural "animals" is ᎡᎿᎢ. Not really familiar with the term ᎢᎾᎨᎢ ᎠᏁᎯ though I can tell you that ᎢᎾᎨᎢ does mean "wilderness". Tsistunagiska (talk) 13:15, 12 ᎦᎶᏂᎢ 2020 (UTC)
